Jeepers Jamboree Cooler: FREE with Any Order on Race Team Store! (while supplies last)
Talk about some serious bag stuffing!!! We had to use our muscles on this one! 🙂
I’m a history buff and appreciate the experience that NORRA has offered some of the ‘ol time’ drivers over the last couple years. I am excited to put one of their shirts in your wardrobe! Be sure to note that there is a second race this year! The NORRA 500 from Sept 27-Oct 1.
I know that the Jeepers Jamboree is a 4×4 event, but these Cooler / Tote Bags are too awesome not to give you one. Hope that is ok… It is perfect for any trip, or like in our household, as a daily lunch bucket.
I hope you are having a GREAT Summer!! ~Charlene

Ed Pearlman is the man who first organized the Mexican 1000, co-founded the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) and founded the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (ORMHOF). In 1966, Don Francisco joined Ed Pearlman and a group of other California based off-road enthusiasts in founding the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA). Francisco helped establish the inaugural Mexican 1000 in 1967. Utilizing his skills as a pilot, Francisco charted a viable racecourse and calculating needed service stop locations. Using his personal aircraft, specially modified to fly on lower octane pump gas, Don was very active during the actual events transporting VIP’s and press up and down the race course. He also worked with Pearlman to establish the first set of rules and classes for the sport of off-road racing.
The first race to be sanctioned by the organization would be the 1967 “Mexican 1000 Rally”beginning in Tijuana and racing from Ensenada to La Paz. 68 vehicles started the race competing in four classes. For the first time different types of vehicles would compete against each other. After the first vehicle, the Myers Manx Buggy driven by Vic Wilson and Ted Mangels came across the line Pearlman knew he had an event that held great potential.
In October 1973, the price for a barrel of crude oil shot up 70% overnight as OPEC launched the Arab Oil Embargo. Despite assurances from the Federal government that PEMEX fuel prices would remain stable, NORRA abandoned the race fearful competitors would abandon the idea of competing and stay home and announced they would hold an event in the state of Arizona.
Baja governor Milton Castellanos handed over sanctioning of the event to a non-profit Mexican corporation called the “Baja Sports Committee” (BSC). BSC renamed the event the “Baja Mil” (Baja 1000) and scheduled the race to run on the original dates chosen by NORRA. Though NORRA held a competing event in the United States that same weekend, BSC successfully ran the race from Ensenada to La Paz like the years prior. Unaware of the challenges, BSC found promoting Baja races more difficult than anticipated. Instead of giving up the race, the Mexican government requested help from Southern California Off-Road Enterprises (SCORE) in hosting and promoting future Baja races. Through negotiations with Mickey Thompson and his SCORE organization, the Government agreed to give exclusive rights to SCORE to hold Baja races and also reluctantly allowed SCORE to cancel the event for 1974 (a year where motorsport was curtailed in the United States because of the oil crisis). SCORE hired Sal Fish as president and took control of the Baja 1000 from that year on with the Baja 1000 race resuming under new control in 1975. In 2012, the racing organization was purchased by Roger Norman. …Ok…now onto NORRA today….
Beginning in 2010, NORRA has staged the highly popular General Tire NORRA Mexican 1000, a four-day stage rally down the entire Baja peninsula that created a competitive environment for vintage off-road vehicles and motorcycles. Known as “The Happiest Race on Earth,” the Mexican 1000 rally format consists of special stages (unlimited speed timed stages in the dirt) linked together by controlled speed liaison / transit sections (highway). Unlike the often harsh and deeply rutted race courses that are now a desert off-road racing staple, NORRA focuses on utilizing fun, fast and more forgiving roads that favor older and current limited-travel machinery, as well as creating unique hospitality environments at the end of each day of competition. It is as much a social event as it is a competitive race.
The NORRA 1000 is in April/May – watch for the 2014 dates. The New NORRA 500 is Sept 27 – Oct 1st, 2013.

About Jeepers Jamboree:
The Jeepers Jamboree is the oldest and largest organized event of this type in the world. It has received worldwide publicity through television, radio, magazines and newspapers. There have been more than 35,000 vehicles or 102,000 people from throughout the world over the famous Rubicon Trail, considered to be the “Granddaddy” of all four-wheel trails – a 10 on most scales! The annual winter storms provide new challenges each year by carving out a different trail among the rocky sluices and granite slabs. As a result, almost all four-wheeling is done at 3‑5 miles per hour or less. The Rubicon Springs encampment (altitude 6,060 ft. and the site of a late 19th Century mineral springs and hotel) provides a setting for fun and relaxation. Here you are wined, dined and entertained in the finest High Sierra style.
The Jeepers Jamboree is always the last full weekend in July and is mostly an Adult Trip. The Jeep Jamboree is always the weekend following (or first full weekend in Aug) and is a Family Trip where kids are encouraged to join. Put it on your to-do list! This is a great way to be able to enjoy the Rubicon Trail without the hassle of bringing in all your food and additional camping equipment. They also have repair services and rock rollers to help navigate the trail.
